Establishing Disease Indexing Services in Afghanistan

Duration of the action 24 months
Objectives of the action

The project shares the overall objective of the EC: To contribute to poverty alleviation in particular for the rural population.

The project’s specific objective is to establish a service system for the visual, serological and biological perennial horticulture crop disease indexing.
Partner(s) The Project will work with associate international matter specialists and with local partners.
Target group(s) A functional service laboratory for disease indexing will support and directly benefit perennial horticulture development efforts by the MAIL, NGOs and the private sector in Afghanistan.
Final beneficiaries The project will benefit all fruit and nut producers in Afghanistan by accessing them to certified, high-quality planting material.
Estimated results (a) Core staff is trained in applying state-of-the-art technology like ELISA for disease indexing; (b) A service laboratory is set up and equipped to identify diseases of perennial horticulture (and potentially other) crops; (c) Support is given to the establishment of procedures to guarantee access of fruit growers to high-quality material.
Main activities

The results-driven activities to be implemented through this project are to:

-          Train core staff in disease indexing;

-          Establish a service laboratory for disease indexing;

-          Assess the incidence of perennial crop diseases in Afghanistan;

Facilitate the establishment of mother stock/nucleus nurseries for the commercial propagation of high-quality planting material.

Promotion of Perennial Horticulture in Northern Afghanistan (PPHNA)

Duration of the action 36 months
Objectives of the action

The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) Afghanistan shares the overall objective of the PHDP project To contribute to poverty alleviation through the revitalisation of the horticulture sector in the north-east of Afghanistan.

The specific project objectives are:

1.    To increase the quantity and quality (and value to nursery owners and farmers) of horticultural products.

2.    To establish sustainable institutions and approaches for the delivery of training and technical support in orchard establishment and rehabilitation, and modern fruit and nut growing.

3.    To increase income for growers and growers' associations resulting from post-harvest marketing and processing.

To contribute to the development of a strong National perennial horticulture industry by promoting public private partnerships
Partner(s) The project will collaborate with a range of actors, including other partner NGOs of the PHDP, relevant Government Departments (e.g. MAIL and MRRD), and rural communities.
Target group(s)

PPHNA foresees the formation of subgroups of growers taking up their specific needs in ongoing participatory group interaction. Specific target groups will include:

·         Land owners interested in establishing new commercial orchards and/or in rehabilitating existing orchards;

·         The landless and small holders;

·         Women
Final beneficiaries The project reaches out to thousands of fruit growers, farming households and less advantaged people in 500 villages in the target provinces of Parwan, Baghlan, Samangan, Kunduz, Takhar and Badakhshan that, together, constitute a high potential region for the development of the horticulture sub-sector.
Estimated results

1.       Improved access for growers to quality planting material and inputs;

2.       Enhanced competencies of targeted farmers and landless labourers in modern growing techniques and orchard management;

3.       Increased value-addition from post harvest sales through innovative marketing by growers and growers' associations;

Strengthened capacities of national, provincial and local institutions to develop a vibrant National perennial horticulture industry.
Main activities

1.  Set up/structuring of MSN associations and engaging nursery owners in the Government-led piloting of a fruit tree certification system;

2.  Establish 6 HDCs and train HDC teams to deliver ICM training through FFS/PTD extension services to organized farmers in core areas identified in the target provinces;

3.  Organise think-tanking workshops with lead growers on post-harvest management, marketing mix and processing and implement/pilot activities agreed on by established CIGs;

Launching stakeholder meetings for an exchange of experience resulting in the development/production of ICM technical and extension manuals. Visibility actions (e.g. farmer field days) and promotion of policy dialogue through Government interaction.
