Duration of the action

This is a three years project starting from April 1, 2007 and ending on March 31, 2010

Objectives of the action

Overall objective: To contribute to poverty alleviation in particular for the rural population.

Objective/ Project Purpose: To improve the livelihood situation of orchards owners and nursery growers’ families by establishing a persistent horticulture development system in Enjil district.

Target group(s) The target group is (631) vulnerable rural families in Enjil district of Herat province The target group is the farmers who are involved in horticulture but they cannot produce high quantity/quality and market demand products, most vulnerable farmers, who are not familiarized with improved horticulture technical awareness, land holders “ who have  (0.2–1) hectare land (farmers interested to the program, returnees and drought affected families who were busy with orchards dealing).
Final beneficiaries The figure above represents the number of families and total direct beneficiaries will be 4417 people based on average of 7 members per family.
Estimated results

The project aims to achieve six main results which are as follows:

1) Increased availability and accessibility for healthy plant materials at horticulture sector.

2) Developed organizational capacity of targeted Farmers Associations (Cooperatives) & Cluster CDCs.

3) Increased & Improved horticulture productivity for rural population.

4) Increased opportunity for employment and income generation.

5) Increased & applied knowledge & skill of CHA & MAI provincial staff on new horticultural practices and policies.

6) Increased public and target groups awareness about horticulture and project intervention in relation to social economic development through Saba Media Organization radio broadcasting program. 
Main activities

1. Formation and Support of Cluster CDCs and Farmers Association (FA).

       -Identification of opportunities to create and strengthen 

        market linkages and increase sales of Horticultural products;

       -Increase the flow of capital to agrobusiness and producers; 

       -Improve infrastructure vital for Horticultural and rural sector Development.

2. Establishment of Nucleus Nurseries (NN) and provide sequential trainings

3. Establishment of Orchards and provide orchard management trainings.

4. Establishment of wind break 

5. Conduct training courses in various subject matters to target group: 

    -Conducting technical trainings for MAI staffs (management, leadership, supervision, monitoring/ evaluation, PCM,  and Advocacy ).

    - (IPM) Integrated Pest Management

    - Agro techniques (Soil improvement, Soil fertility, Water Management, Cultivation methods and weeding).

     - Agro business

6. Vocational training (fruits process, drying, sulphuring, shelling).

7. Inter-organizational learning and dissemination of program practices.

8. Produced radio horticulture distance learning program, project information.
