Objectives of the action

Overall objective(s)

To contribute to the poverty alleviation of rural population groups in Laghman and Kunar provinces of Afghanistan.

 

Specific objective

To increase incomes of orchard owners from fruits marketing through an improved access to quality inputs, information, services and market.

Final beneficiaries 1,251 families of farmers or approximately 8,757 people
Estimated results

ER #1: Availability of quality and certified plant materials has increased to better meet the needs of orchard owners.

ER #2: Orchard owners produce fruits in higher quantity and improve the quality of their production thanks to improved methods.

ER #3: Orchard owners have an improved negotiation capacity in the marketing chain.
Main activities

Activity 1. 1: Conduction of a comprehensive baseline and market survey of fruit markets, fruit producers and nurserymen to identify the actual production, as well as the demand and marketing potential / constraints of the diverse fruit varieties.

Activity 1. 2: Maintenance of 2 nucleus nurseries by MADERA in Kunar province.

Activity 1. 3: Establishment of 21 new private nurseries and reinforcement of 10 existing private nurseries.

< Linking and coordination of all fruit sector’s actors through two associations.

Activity 2. 1: Establishment of two provincial associations of producers in Kunar & Laghman, involving the local nurseries & developing networks with markets.

Activity 2. 2: Establishment of 300 new commercial orchards in Kunar & Laghman provinces.

Activity 2. 3: Technical extension work for orchard owners and nurserymen.

Activity 2. 4: Research & Development

Activity 3. 1: Continuous advocacy and networking among market actors to develop privileged links with the targeted producers through the associations.
